Darkness Falls Like A Black Leather Jacket...

As a teen I was not a goth, I was just... dark. I've always been into the darker side of art, music, film, and culture in general; however, I do love me some glam and glitter. Luckily, I never did the whole "wee, I'm a vampire" bit, although I can remember cutting myself just so I could write notes for my mom to find, because obviously ink was not dramatic enough for the occasion. An outsider even among the outsiders, who were actually popular insiders?

Deborah Harry sums it up pretty well on "End of The Run"
Darkness falls like a black leather jacket and melts into the sidewalk like a sleeping drunk.
In the streets, the wind throws yesterday's headlines around.
Another night comes and goes.

So, for awhile back then there was someplace to go.
Somewhere more home than a house.
A family of choice, not an accident, but sometimes as soon as something gets started it's over.

I think we all had someplace to go where we felt something and/or anything.
Creating demented black and white drawings and daydreaming were big chunks of my life in between the dreaded school, where they force you to interact with people you have no desire to be sealed up with all day, not to mention "art" teachers who know absolutely nothing about the subject. Dressing up and going to see midnight movies like The Hunger or catching matinees like Nico Icon were many times the highlight of my weekends and John Waters and Dark Shadows are saviours. Damned, I always find myself falling in love with dark images and voices.

I got the album by SOAP&SKIN last year and did not give it the time it deserves, so shame on me, because it is fucking excellent. This video caught me by the ears because I love the rawness of it compared to the album version and by the peepers because for some odd reason, she resembles Thelma from Hex...

Soap & Skin - "Spiracle"

As soon as I heard Zola Jesus I was hooked, so see kids...it only takes one time and you can become an addict! Her voice just blows me away and this video is gorgeous and gritty and it gives me hope because no matter how much shit music they try to force-feed the masses, people like this exist, so support them.

Don't Call It A Comeback...

Whoa, what a whirlwind life has been lately. This blog is now a one-woman show! Can you fucking believe it? I may not post as many music links since I am not in the mood to be dragged off to the big house and called out as the "new fish", but I will still post wicked links and videos that will melt your peepers. Let's face it, melted retinas are going to be HUGE in 2010, so I'm just giving you a jump-start to your new life as a style icon.
The Horrors are already prepared...check out the eyewear:

I'm a bit drunk at this fine hour of 2:00 PM, so I will make it short. I've been contemplating the molestation of a friend's puppet, but he's totally asking for it, so it's ok. Where the hell does a puppet get roofies anyway? Hmmm, makes you wonder.

Breaking news! I will be visiting my beautiful, witty, artistic, very missed and sassy friends The Club Creatures soon! I am beyond excited! Pray for me and New York and the lovely J who suffers through my madness because she too is mad and a great friend. Speaking of my brilliantly mad friends, have you been checking in on Meet Cleaver Theatre? If not, you need to be drawn and quartered in your local town square and I can only hope for a large turnout, a youtube video documenting the event and funnel cakes!

I love this video despite the vocals sounding sound like they were recorded using the TPain APP for iPhone:

The Bee's Knees

Ah Sunday, which means I am hungover. I went to a bangin' bash last night, but only danced to a few songs because I am lame and got way too intoxicated for life. Today, I shall keep it chill.

This song and the video were swimming in my mind as I was driving earlier:

New Order - Confusion

Röyksopp - Miss It So Much feat. Lykke Li

Sneaker Pimps - Curl

Oh hell yes! I am posting this INXS song because I am wearing a KICK t-shirt and this album was massive and fills me with nostalgia. I'm positively gagging on it, haha!

INXS - Never Tear Us Apart

I am always drawn to interesting art, so it's not surprise that I like the work of Gregory Jacobsen. I can see some prude finding the paintings twisted and/or morbid, but I find them quite beautiful. The details keep me going back for another peek...in case I missed some important piece to the visual.

Peter Doherty will be releasing his solo album 'Grace/Wastelands' in the next few weeks. I am really enjoying the first single ‘Last of The English Roses’, so I have high hopes for the album.

Glass Plumage

Let's talk a bit about horror films. They have always been a fave of mine, although Phantasm scared the shit out of me, but I got over the feeling of always looking under the bed before I could even think of going to sleep...until Candyman. I think one of the things that creeped me out so bad, is the fact that we used to play a similar "game" called Bloody Mary, which also freaked me out. It's all fun and games until some dead bitch comes to getcha! I remember seeing this film with some co-workers and we had a loudspeaker at work and they would announce over the speaker that I had a call. Well, I would pick up the line only to hear one of those psychos say "Candyman, Candyman, Candyman" in a deep and creepy Tony Todd "Candyman" voice. I suppose that's what happens when you work with maniacs. "It was always you Helen..."

Candyman Trailer

Rosetta Howard & The Harlem Hamfats - The Candy Man

I love this damn comic series! Sock Monkey is the creation of Tony Millionaire and it is so hilarious and slightly disturbing.

Thee Headcoatees - Punk Girl

Bat For Lashes have a new album out soon, so go buy it. The title is Two Suns and it is just as lush as Fur and Gold.

Bat For Lashes - Glass

Random songs of the day:
The Raincoats - You're A Million

MC Lyte - Cha Cha Cha

I chose these because let's face it: The Raincoats rule and MC Lyte is pure badass.

Sinead O'Connor with MC Lyte - I Want Your Hands on Me

I'm so taken with feathers lately. I want them in jewelry, in my hair...yes. I think it may be because I have been sketching birds a lot and have a new appreciation for the beauty of plumage.

"Oooh Wee Baby"

Well, it seems today is Valentine's Day. It's weird because this is the first time I've been single in a decade and it's fucking fantastic to not be bothered with the nonsense. For those of you who choose to feed the madness, I have decided to give you an aural goody. The song I've chosen is by the legendary Otis Redding and it contains one of my all time favorite lines "oooh wee baby", which I use way too often both in conversation and just talking to myself (usually I delete the "baby" part, depending upon the conversation/situation).

Photobucket

Otis Redding - Champagne & Wine

Nothing beats a night of drinking and dancing. I am digging Thunderheist so hardcore. The songs have a nice flow and grooving beats, served up with the lyrics of clublife. This video looks simple, then you catch glimpses of talons and beak, then you have a second of "what the fuckness" and you are then sucked in for the remainder. "oooh wee baby"

Thunderheist - Jerk It (Contest Cut)

Thunderheist - Red Whine

As always, some randomness! Spin the wheel...

Secession - Love Lies Bleeding

The Prids - All Apart and No Fall

I cannot go without mentioning how sad we were when we heard about the death of Lux Interior. I first saw The Cramps as teenager and it blew my motherfucking mind. Seeing the absolute rawness and intensity of his performance was like witnessing a rock n roll ritual and those performances will be something I will never forget. Ever. I will not post a Cramps song, but I will post a song they deemed worthy of covering. Thanks Lux!

Space Guns and Phil Lynott

Today I shall post some Phil Lynott. Most know him from Thin Lizzy, and while I respect, honor, and appreciate that period, I am going to post some of his solo work and collaborations. I'm sure there are purists that were appalled by the use of synth, samples, and space guns in the solo music...I happen to really like it. Listening to Thin Lizzy is like having a really great conversation over many drinks and way too many cigarettes, with a master storyteller at some dirty pub. You are so mesmerized by the content of what you are hearing, that you ignore all of the nonsense occurring around you. The solo albums are more mellow, but the feeling remains the same.

Phil Lynott - Yellow Pearl

Phil Lynott - Solo In Soho

Phil Lynott - Old Town

Phil Lynott - The Man's A Fool

Phil Lynott - Fatalistic Attitude

Phil Lynott - Ode To A Black Man

He appears on the Johnny Thunders album So Alone, contributing bass and vocals.

Johnny Thunders - London Boys

Johnny Thunders - Leave Me Alone

Johnny Thunders - Daddy Rollin' Stone

The Greedies - A Merry Jingle

The BPA is basically Fatboy Slim and features Jamie T, Martha Wainwright, Emmy The Great, and David Byrne among others. I'm undecided on the album, but I do know that I want the Iggy puppet!!!

The BPA - He's Frank (Slight Return) Feat. Iggy Pop

The BPA (feat. Pete York) - Dirty Sheets

Rip It Up!

As everyone may or may not know, I got nothin' but love for Phantom of The Paradise in all of its camp and glory. Paul Williams is basically some kind of evil genius? Here he is singing The Hell of It from The Hardy Boys & Nancy Drew Meet Dracula :

While on the subject of Phantom, can I just say that Winslow Leach (The Phantom):

should be receiving royalties from Marilyn Manson for biting his style.

And now for something completely different and off-topic...
Jamie T is back! Please check out the video for Fire Fire

Sunday, Sunday is for relaxing and shaking it to the sweet, sweet rock n roll. You know some people have sold their souls for it?

Tarot, Litter, and White Castle Boxes

Visions of the past, present, and future fill my mind these days. I don't know if I consider myself superstitious, but some signs cannot be ignored. Many years ago I was driving home from who knows where in the wee hours and along with the White Castle boxes and the cast of usual garbage littered about, there was a bunch of Tarot cards. Yes, in the light from my headlights, there were Tarot cards haphazardly, taunting drivers and I was taking no chances. My luck is shit enough without that hanging over my head, so before I reached the cards, I stopped in the middle of the road and made a detour.

Nina Hagen - Taitschi-Tarot

These New Puritans - Numerology AKA Numbers

Marcia Griffiths - Gypsy Man

Demonic Cat by Graffiti Island has been stuck in my head and played a lot recently. The lyrics are solid gold and give me a warm fuzzy feeling when I see my own little kitty acting out the scenarios in the song.

I know I posted about Fever Ray last time, but since then the video for the first single has been released. It is chilly and beautiful. The album is pretty fucking magnificent and we should all own it.

Fever Ray 'If I Had A Heart'

Food drama is no fun. I love Cookstr for the easy navigation and brill ideas when I'm tired of everything, they can even "Surprise Me". Love it.

Ice Dreams

Sleep has been missing from my existence lately, but more on that later. As usual, life has been stabbing me up with icicle daggers, which is quite green really since I can use the shards to make cocktails. Speaking of ice, I am so captivated by the beauty and artistry of ICEHOTEL. Take a moment to visit the site and check out the various creations, for each room features a different theme as its inspiration.

City Movers by Benny Ekman

One room that caught my eye is City Movers , but they are all amazing in their own unique way. I want to visit. Now.

Yoko Ono - Walking On Thin Ice

This song has been in my head, so now it can infiltrate yours as well.
The Knife - You Take My Breath Away

Fever Ray is exciting me. Karin's voice is so distinct and wonderfully eerie.

Back to sleep or should I say my lack of sleep? Images visit me in folds of fabric, but I'm not lucky enough to have wicked Dali designed dreams like those featured in the clip below from Spellbound (I just get demons, lions, birds, and contorted faces):

Pauline Murray and The Invisible Girls-Dream Sequence 1

School of Seven Bells-Half Asleep

Lulu Rouge-Sweeter Than Sweet

Movies keep me company when I should be hanging with Morpheus. Recently I watched two films that were quite nice. Wristcutters: A Love Story was a lovely film about life after suicide and it features Tom Waits and lots of music by Gogol Bordello. Another strangeness regarding music played in the bar scenes, was the fact that they used only bands who lost members to suicide, like Joy Division and Christian Death.

The second movie is nothing shy of magnificent! Phantom of the Paradise is brilliant and I love everything about it. The costumes, the music, and the way the "Phantom" gets disfigured is genius on a silver platter. Glam baby!

Photobucket

Sometimes you just want to be all enclosed away from everything (maybe it would help me sleep better?). I was going to post a beautiful picture of a snuggly cocoon, but rather than looking warm and cozy, they just looked like a tampon. Bummer. Besides, my isolation would possibly end up a shambles like the Ab Fab episode Iso Tank.

These songs make me feel.

Deerhunter - Agoraphobia

Cat Stevens - Wild World

Telepathe - Can't Stand It
